This is Maria. Maria thinks that she is experiencing a reality where she’s in Hawaii, talking on the phone to her mom.

But in fact this is Maria’s reality 👆
Oh no, Maria is a Brain-in-a-vat! 😱
Oh no, Maria is a Brain-in-a-vat! 😱

Many of Maria’s fundamental beliefs are false.

But some of Maria’s beliefs seem to be “more false” than others. In what sense, though?

In what sense did Jack sacrifice his life for Rose during the Titanic disaster, in spite of the fact that there were never such people in reality?

So in what sense is “I have a body” true? It is true in-the-fiction. And “I have 3 legs” is false in-the-fiction.

Which of these propositions thought of by Maria are true in-the-fiction and which are false in-the-fiction?

Is this claim thought of by Maria true in-the-fiction? Yes, because we assume physicalism is true, but…

But what is a metaphysical impossibility anyway?

What’s the problem, though? So what if there is a metaphysical impossibility? Fictions contain those all the time.

Why is it the case that Maria refers to a fictional brain rather than her real brain in-the-fiction?

Thank you 🙂
